Brands with a conscience are fast replacing companies that focus on shareholder return. At Wedgewood we are inspired by global leaders in sustainable business and are committed to being net contributors to this amazing planet.
While we are always trying to limit the use of single use plastics, we have offset our plastic used by giving three rand for every kg of plastic that we bring into the Wedgewood Makery and Bakery to “The Litterboom Project”. This donation is then used to fund the removal of one kilogram of plastic from our natural environment through innovative waste barriers across rivers, trained River Wardens and waste collection depots in rural impoverished communities that are not serviced by municipal waste collection. In 2023 a total of R128,350 was donated to The Litterboom Project which funded the removal of 42,783kg of plastic from our rivers.
Wedgewood supports Singakwenza Early Childhood Education who train practitioners, parents and caregivers at grassroots level to facilitate educational activities that enable young children to develop foundational skills for learning through play.
Channeling a meaningful amount of our turnover towards environmental and biodiversity conservation is one of our measures of success and something we push ourselves to continually improve on. Some of the projects to date have included the support of Endangered Wildlife Trust and their Blue Swallow research program, critical species monitoring with Wildlife ACT, building an enclosure for the African Wood owls at the African Raptor Center and the many amazing projects on the go at Zululand Conservation trust.
In addition to our 1% for the planet initiative, Wedgewood has a number of other projects on the go, such as; working with local African beekeepers to create sustainable beekeeping partnerships through ethical practice to ensure the well-being of the bees and the communities who benefit from this valuable resource. Wedgewood has also launched the “Handmade Gift box Project” in 2021 in answer to a need within our community to create jobs for previously disadvantaged people with disabilities. The project enables people with disabilities to contribute to their family income, whilst creating beautiful boxes that are used in our gifting.
